This book still holds up despite it's 1997 pub date. Haunting in more ways than one we experience the significant lows of Gerald and Angel's lives as they navigate trying to survive living in Cincinati with an abusive stepfather and predominantly absent mother. There were small moments of light but this is mostly a sad novel with a short page length. This feels a bit episodic like a tv show but this helped kept me invested even though the circumstances were not great for our characters.

The story was okay, I just didn't care for the writing. It felt very episodic. Years or months would go by, the narrator would explain what things were like for the family at that moment, and then you'd get a scene with some action and dialogue. Then, once again, lots of time would go by, lots of narration, then a scene. I didn't care for it. The ending was also very predictable.

Very sad book. I read in under 24 hours. I think the saddest part of this book is that everything Gerald had to deal with actually happens in life. Reminds me of the song Concrete Angel by Martina McBride.

I understand why Gernald wasn't mentioned that much in the first book. I never understood why he was mentioned losely, or why his friends were casually talking about his abusive step-father. Now I understand. I loved this book. I'm only giving it three stars, because the mom wasn't really there. I think Jordan physically and mentally abused her, because the way he was treating them was not respect. You don't hit your family. You don't rape your child. So, no. I like how the tiger still had significance in this book, and the title is chef's kiss.

I love this book. I read it in my ELA class, and got it finished in three days. (I am a fast reader) The experiences of Gerald & Angel are something else, which you will feel overwhelmed. Great job Sharon!!
