Such a beautiful pop-up book. I’ve owned this book since I was like 6. I think this is my first time actually reading it

I initially picked this up because we really don't see too many pop-up books anymore (we being my co-workers and I at our local bookstore). They are viewed as being a sort of passe novelty, but I personally love the idea so I picked this up to read it while on shift today. It is a very short read, and literally took me 20 minutes (and probably only that long because I spent most of my time looking at/playing with the illustrations). I wound up with a conflicting viewpoint of the book.

First, I enjoyed the illustrations for how technically awesome they were. There were some really complicated mechanics involved with this book that I admired. The only disappointing aspect of the illustrations was that I thought the main character looked like a zombified boy with long hair, and nothing like a little girl at all (and no, not because I feel that gender roles should be illustrated through pink and frilly dresses instead of jeans and Red Sox Jerseys). That aside, if I were to rate this book based on the sheer pop-up factor alone, I would have given it a 4.

However, the story itself did not interest me. It was vaguely amusing, but overall just strange for the sake of being strange. In my opinion Stephen King is one of the unfortunates that has managed to hang around for so long he has stereotyped himself. I am not saying this is negative. I just don't think that it translated very well into this medium, and that is ultimately why I gave the book two stars. I had a fun 20 minutes, but this book is inconsequential enough for me to forget in the very near future.

This combines two of my least favorite things: nature and sports. Even so, it's an incredibly fun story and so creepy. (The idea of being lost in nature with no way to get to help? No thank you.)
