It is hard to describe what Candy is. Probably it's best to see it as an attempt at an ironic erotic novel, in which our eponymous heroine gets into a series of sexual entanglements caused by her desire to be more 'giving'. But does it work as such? Not really – it contains plenty of farce (it goes without saying this is mostly pretty explicit in nature) but it doesn't really satirise the genre it is attempting to send up, even though it is very funny in places. Keen readers of Terry Southern will see elements of the style he would carry with far more success into novels such as The Magic Christian, but really this is a period curiosity which is fun and frivolous at times rather than a classic.

Many parts of this book are truly 'laugh-out-loud' scenarios. Other parts are extremely uncomfortable to read. And the ending was one of the most cringe-worthy pages I've ever read.
Not a children's book by any means, and not for the squeamish. Lots of graphic, um, adult-nature sections.
One of the 500 Essential Cult Books.

Basically just a pretty young woman getting taken advantage (TW for SA) of (Playboy Magazine named it one of the “25 Sexiest Novels” in 2006 if that’s any indication). Very much written by men.

This was awful. Just...awful. I would like to say it reminded me a bit of [b:S.|98110|S.|John Updike|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1380492331s/98110.jpg|94568] by [a:John Updike|6878|John Updike|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1419249254p2/6878.jpg], but that resemblance is backward. Anyone who has read [b:S.|98110|S.|John Updike|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1380492331s/98110.jpg|94568] will know what I mean.

I'm glad I knew, going in, that this was a satirical novel because if I thought it was serious I would not have been able to finish. Is it erotica? I guess, but the way in which Candy is painted as a such an innocent slut (talk about an oxymoron!) is offensive.

2/14 - I've been reading other reviews and feel I should add a note.
Another "gentleman" said that the ridiculous situations Candy finds herself in, i.e. a full gynecological exam in a public restroom, a Buddha statue's nose shoved up her ass as a penis fills her front, are all situations that men, being the oversexed beings they are, truly believe could happen. They don't, but true men are always ready. If and when...
If I had read that review first I know I would have been more amused by this book than sickened.

I did not know what i was getting into when i picked this out to read on the plane. I’m glad i was reading the finnish translation bc it meant no-one around me could understand what i was reading.

Funny in a Scary Movie type of way, def disturbing most of the time, not sure if i got anything out of it. Made me reflect on my own ideas of sex maybe??
