I actually listened to the audio book of the second edition but I didn't see that version listed.

Incredibly difficult history to swallow, especially if you're from or claim your south american heritage. This was an eye opener, if not a vital book for all hispanic people to read. NONE of this was ever covered in schools in the USA, and I feel my already engorged resentment for this racist country grow with more power in knowledge. I'm also thankful it dives into anti-blackness in hispanic cultures, although some of the worded choices were vaguely anti-black itself, which brings it down from 5 stars.

Wow. I thought I knew a fair amount of Latino US history, but boy was I wrong. If you want to get a comprehensive, but succinct overview of Latinos in the United States, this is the book for you.

Juan Gonzalez covers history starting before the Southwest was considered the US all the way through the impacts of NAFTA and the 2006 Immigrant rights marches.

It is an impressive demonstration of how much the US has oppressed Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and other countries. He lays it out so clearly the ways in which we have oppressed, colonized, and damaged the Latino populations in our states and South of the border. It's hard to argue with his clear facts, stories, and narrative weaving it all together.

I'm sure I'll read this again and be just as amazed as this first read. Go buy it today.

LOVED IT! Contextualized so much of the U.S. history I already knew, but within the history of how U.S. imperialism detriments and destroys much of the autonomy of Latin American within the Global South, making this push-pull effect of pushing people out due to terrible conditions, and pulling them in with a false promise of economic prosperity. Really amazing, and engaging to read!
