2.5 maybe. This was written really beautifully but I honestly had no idea what was going on. It jumps between characters but because it was a single narrator I didn't know who was talking most of the time. It's also not very plot heavy and focuses mostly on memory and flashes of different scenes so I felt it easy to get lost. I thought the bits about the mother's illness were good but other than that I really don't know what to say!

Broken people trying to navigate an even more broken system. These characters are so well-developed and real, even at their most depraved. This slice of life into a Cuban family is disquieting and relentless. How does a family navigate life when the only thing holding them together, is in free fall?
Highly recommended. So much depth created from such short and punchy sentences. An author to continue watching.

A very affecting novel that illustrates one family's relationship with illness, economic conditions, corruption, and death. I resonated with many of the themes and everyday tragedies so much that I could not rate it any lower than five stars. Each perspective was complex and familiar, and the insights into the world and worldview of the characters were intimately knowledgable.

I’d definitely enjoy this one more if I read it in print, a disjointed, polyvocal story not much suited for audio read by one narrator
