A good variety of western landscapes and situations. The end was a bit bleak, which was ok. Fables, history, etc.

A solid collection of short stories, all tied together in that they take place in the Great American Desert, aka the American Midwest. Some of the stories are more about the land and water, how we destroy and underestimate what we cannot see - these stories are as engrossing as they are infuriating, all the more so because they are steeped in history. And many of the other stories are short, 4-5 pages, snapshots in time in midwesterners' lives, sad little moments that may or may not be unique to the region. And then even a couple almost post-apocalyptic sci-fi stories, which don't sound like they would work with the others, but they do. Some of the stories blur together and are forgettable, but in all a great, fast read.
