This feels like a very heartfelt argument that I was not the intended audience for.  The argument that most of the modern humanities owe their existence to philology is very extensively argued and I feel like if I was a humanities graduate, I might understand why the argument needs to be made.  As a STEM student, I spent the whole time wondering why this was an argument that needed to be made.

It was in the last  chapter that Turner finally makes the argument that the studies of language, history and culture are too inter-dependent to be easily divided and perhaps the hyper-specialization of modern humanities disciplines is a case of missing the forest for the trees.

It was a lovely book, clearly a labour of love.  I just felt like I wasn't really the intended audience.
