Death in the Haymarket is a thorough coverage of the events that lead up to the Haymarket Affair and a bit after. I was enjoying it through about the first half. It felt like a quick read at the point and everything felt purposeful. It then lost me through the last half. The details started feeling a little more tertiary and pedantic. I do agree with others as well that it would have been useful to have a timeline and maybe a list of people mentioned with a line or two about each.

Very timely and informative, but the writing is so slow and dense that it took forever to get through this book. A great reminder of the importance of labor unions, but it would have helped to have a timeline and a brief who's who at the end.

A very educational book. I didn't know much about the events leading up to the Haymarket, or what happened after it, but I do enjoy my eight hour workday.

Informative. Wish it were better organized, described what was entailed in the labor of the day, and would have interrogated male bias re: "skilled labor"

While not Devil in the White City, this book does paint a picture of Chicago. This picture is one of class and labor. It is drawn with a careful hand and a clear vision, with a crisp writing style. I really enjoyed the clarity and the research that went into this book.

The author seems well versed in the history if Chicago, the riots themselves and the labor movement. All off that is given the appropriate amount of space and focus in the book.

Great book for anybody who likes history and lives in the Chicago area!

I learned all sorts of things about the Haymarket incident that I never knew, such as that it is the origin of much of May Day as a labor celebration, and that the Chicago Tribune was as much an instrument of the wealthy right-wing business class in the 1860s and 1870s as it has been in the past 25 years--and that my home is within a medium-long walk of the cemetery where those who were hanged are buried.
