My thoughts on the first book are the same for this one - while devastating things occur within these pages, the style of writing lessens the blow. Nevertheless, it's executed in a way that doesn't make you feel like you're missing out on any aspect of the story.

I think this sequel is much better than its predecessor, and it ties together different scientific concepts in a way that flows very well.

I have really mixed feelings about this book because I liked the mythology and I did think a lot of the questions from the first book were answered in really interesting ways but there is just no reason to feel an attachment to any of these characters. This was a problem in the first book too. I think if the plot were focused on the events of the story in a broader sense I'd like it more but the interpersonal relationships between the characters I really don't need. Especially when they are going to be so underdeveloped and in some cases (like Eva) almost nonsensical. I also had issues with the tone because for all that the world was ending in pretty dramatic ways there was a real flippant attitude from many of the characters that didn't seem to be character traits.

I'd rate it 3 stars though and I'll probably check out the third book as well just to see where this story goes. The story about the aliens and their motivation for coming to earth is interesting and I'll admit I really enjoyed the audiobook. It has a full cast and it's very high quality. Basically I wouldn't say this is one of my favorites but I'm interested enough to see where it goes.

Killed a character in a stupid way and I immediately lost interest

(3 1/2 stars) This second book in the Themis Files series delivered everything that I loved about Sleeping Giants: interview style of storytelling, the interviewer himself, the other characters, sci-fi elements, the smooth writing. And, the multi-cast audiobook did another superb job. I was very much entertained.

But this time around, the character development did fall a bit short; the characters seemed stagnant while the plot progressed. This is only a slight complaint of mine because the driving force for book two is the plot with the various Waking Gods. What is their purpose? Where are they from? What game are they playing? And the humans, how much more chaos and arrogance will the general public and governments display? The plot definitely kept me wanting to know more.

Side note: after reading this book, I started watching Kuromukuro along with knowing a bit about Attack on Titan (both are Japanese Animes), I couldn't help but think that Neuvel's story is not all that unique. Even so, his Themis Files series is entertaining and unique enough for me.

Waking Gods is much more fast-paced and action-packed than Sleeping Giants, and I found myself getting really sucked into this one! I have no idea if the scientific facts presented in this novel are sound or not, but it felt very believable and added a depth of realism to the storyline. This book is written in a way that feels very movie-like, and I could easily visualize all of the different elements and give voice to all of the different characters (Kevin Spacey would make a fantastic narrator/mystery man!). I am looking forward to the next book in this series!
