I love picture books like this where the art tells as much of the story as the words do. Frankie and Sal have done everything, so they decide to do nothing, which is harder than it looks, apparently. Fun, fun, fun.

This is a very endearing story about two young friends who decide to do nothing, but one of them just can’t seem to get it right. He gets landed on by birds, peed on by a dog, and scaled by king kong. You’ll have to read the book to make sense of that, but I liked it a lot. This book uses a sketch line, much like you’d see in cartoons. They are bold and dark but whimsical too. It evokes a feeling of childhood, when I enjoyed comics like those you see in Dennis the Menace. The colors used are also bold and solid, a very juvenile color palate. The space in this book is definitely two dimensional. The author doesn’t need to rely on image depth to relay the message of this book. The basic illustration really adds to the emotion of the book. It helps to enforce that these are two young men playing make believe in their bedroom. I particularly like the beginning introduction when the characters are initially thinking out loud, and the thoughts are displayed in images, that are in black and white. This helps to distinguish between reality and thought.

How can you possibly do nothing? This would pair well with "I'm Bored!" Awesome book! Love the illustrations!

"Even when his body is motionless, Frankie's imagination is still motoring along. Love that kid. Frankie and Sal may be my favorite pair of boys since Righty & Lefty, or Trouble Gum."

It's the literary version of Phineas and Ferb.... and instead of doing something, these two boys decide to do nothing! But they quickly find out if you have an active imagination, it's really hard to do nothing. Imagine trying to sit and do nothing, but then you think you are a statue and pigeons are landing on you! You have to get them off, and then suddenly you're not doing nothing!! You'll laugh along when you see just how hard it is to do nothing!
This book is a 2011-12 Monarch nominee.
