The plot of this entire series is, "and then *that person* betrays him! Overly melodramatic and bluntly predeterministic.

It's certainly a fantastic finish with only the minor blemish of feeling slightly too long in certain spots. It's a mind twister with some of the time travel aspects but oh so enjoyable.

I read it because I liked The Will of the Many so much. And this series has its seeds of greatness, its worldbuilding foreshadows the next book.

But it lets down in composition. The worldbuilding is overwrought; the plot convoluted and difficult to follow. I assume it all comes together in a logical sense but it does not come together in an aesthetic sense.

Also, the characterization suffers. My suspicion is that he is mimicking Wheel of Time -- I believe he mentions it as an inspiration somewhere. Regardless, the images I get of the characters are very similar to those of Rand's friends. The trouble is, they're not fleshed out enough, the story beats take so much time that in the end I don't care when likable side characters die. I think by the time of the Will... book the author has mostly found his voice, at least there the comparisons to Wheel of Time did not pop up constantly in my mind.

So it's okay, but with lots of faults so I don't really recommend it. Epic fantasy series are aplenty and take a lot of time to read so spend it wisely.

I realize I cannot even realistically wish it were shorter as perhaps the turns and tides of the really endless plot are necessary and cannot be compressed. But I wish it were possible.
