This was lame af. Can't believe I've read this. Would totally not recommend. Too much plot that doesn't serve any purpose.

my grandparents lived in Eastern Germany and my parents lived there for the first ten years of their life, until the countries were reunited. For me this book has been a way to really understand the feelings of the generation back then. My grandma has told me a lot and I just think it’s generally very important to get to know more of it because spending a big time of her life in the GDR, it has obviously shaped her life to some extend.
It is not just a tragic love story but it describes the feelings of many friends, families and lovers - it is a historical document that describes a whole period of German history.

An excellently written book, and I learned a lot from it. I don't know enought about my own country's past, and this book was a great first step to learning more.
Quite apart from that, I enjoyed the languid prose in Rita's isolation, and the episodic clearer memories.

Nach der Hälfte abgebrochen. Schön geschrieben. Die Handlung und Figuren waren aber leider zu eintönig für meinen Geschmack. Es ging sehr viel um Produktion und politische Positionen.
