Subtle and clear in it's story-telling and thoughtful in its exploration of family, identity and belonging. I am wildly impressed by the strength of this book and the recounting of this journey all while retaining a certain level of privacy and objectivity. It takes a phenomenal writer to take such a personal event and write about it in a way that can move all kinds of people.

An honor to read.

My dad is an Asian transracial adoptee, so while I personally can't speak on his behalf, I really enjoyed Chung's writing and I empathize with her daughters. Adoption is one of those things we really don't dare criticize for fear that it be taken the wrong way, and that's not fair to assume that adoptees should be endlessly grateful for their situation. I'm excited to check out her followup work A Living Remedy, as well as anything else she might publish in the future.

The voice of this book was all over the place.

I’ll be honest, I cried during parts of this. I’m not adopted but her experience as a cross-culture kid I think speaks to parts of an experience that non-adopted immigrant kids feel too. There were things that were heart breaking my harder than I will ever experience but still, parts of it spoke to me so deeply.
