There’s a wonderful sense of circularity to this novel that - like a younger girl’s ‘13 Minutes’ - shows just how unpleasant teenage girls can be.
We start with a group of girls making their way to the local drowning pond on Halloween. One of the group is not meant to return.
Then we switch back in time so we can see the build-up to the situation. We watch Nicky, desperate to fit in, get sucked into the vile behaviour of Queen Bee, Isabella. They are determined to make Lizzie Brown pay for what they think she has done wrong.
I think this is probably best suited to teen readers who can be horrified by the creepy goings-on and empathise with the girls involved.
