Certainly not the best Holocaust "based on a true story" novel I've ever read, but I did enjoy the story. I didn't realize it was even based on a real person until the epilogue. If you Google it, you're going to see that there were a lot of issues people had with reality of life in Auschwitz and Birkenau. I can see the big problem with Cilka's Journey, considering the author didn't interview Cecilia, but I do think some grace can be given to her attempts to extract the story from Lale and have it researched. I'm not going to get bent out of shape that a historical record can't be found of prisoners being gassed in a bus....people were still absolutely being gassed at Auschwitz, and that's the important stuff I took away. I found myself sobbing by the end of the afterword and it took awhile to stop. Sometimes love does conquer all.

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I felt it was slightly better than average and that it was not the best historical fiction I’ve ever read. With that being said, I would still likely recommend this book to others.
