A self-proclaimed liar and leaver who is also a chef-in-training travels to North Carolina to settle his late mother's affairs. While there, he has a dream of being in a whale-shaped structure and sets out to build it - which attracts lots of media attention and spiritual pilgrims. While this is going on, two very odd criminals compete to buy a mysterious list from him that his mother supposedly left behind - but which he can't find (and he has no idea what the contents of the list are even supposed to be).

I was slow to warm up to this story. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters for probably the first 100 pages, but the plot was interesting enough by then to keep me going. The book is quirky (the author's influences may include Tom Robbins or Douglas Adams), but it's more earnest than most other quirky absurdist books I've read. It's pretty well-written, but the ending felt really abrupt and odd to me. Overall, though, I think I liked it.
