Okay, wow! That was a prime bit of psychological storytelling: hard-hitting and impactful, tightly plotted and well paced. I hung on every word.

A spooky tale about bullying, Halloween, and fire.

Back in 2018 I read Oak Avenue and The Sleep Tight Motel, totally forgot about this series until this year when I was preparing for my Spooktober and decided to check out Hannah-Beast!

It wasn’t always the easiest of books to read because of the bullying + what happened to Hannah, but it was a good book to read with plenty of spooks and plenty of OH NO-moments.

In this book we follow Amanda in the now as she waves bye to her daughter who is about to trick or treat and we see how she struggles each year with the kids in the Hannah-Beast costumes. As the story continues we find out what has happened and my heart broke for Amanda, but I also wanted to kick her for not being kinder when someone needed it. Peer pressure and all that ahoy. How do we find out what has happened? Well, we also get the Then with Hannah in spotlight. Hannah a girl who wanted to have friends and be happy, but instead was horribly manipulated and bullied by people at school, the main group being three girls, including Amanda. We see what horrible events led to what we saw in the now. It wasn’t easy to read, but I did love that we switched back and forth between now and then and got more and more to see on the situation.

I have to say I felt for Hannah and was hoping that she would just say fuck no to the girls, but at the same time didn’t like her for a lot of the parts. I get peer pressure, I get that she was excited, but she just went way too far with things. Shouting and screaming at people? Being rude? And then also breaking and entering without any second thoughts? I mean, again, peer pressure, but she just didn’t seem to have any bit of remorse about things and that just stood out to me.

The ending was a shock! I had expected A LOT of things but not that! But it did leave me with questions and a lot of sadness.

All in all, this was a good novella and definitely a good one for Halloween. I should see if I can get the other books in the Dark Corners series~

My Rating: 3.5 rounded down to 3⭐️⭐️⭐️ a good little shortie that was spooky without being supernatural!!!

No synopsis on this one was it was only a shortie (approx 68 pages), I went for something I could finish in one sitting and I liked to dig out the Kindle Singles on Kindle Unlimited. This one forms part of the Dark Corners series which is an Amazon Original Short Story. There are 4 or 5 in the series (not related to each other) all designed to be read as standalone short stories.

If you read my reviews you will know I use short stories as palette cleansers, something when I can’t decide on my next read or something that I can read in one sitting. This was the latter for me last night… I wasn’t quite ready for bed but I didn’t want to spend half my reading time choosing my next book!!!

Hannah-Beast is a sad spooky story of childhood bullies and how things can get very out of hand very quickly. It is set at Halloween and the timeline changes between 1982 to 2016, you learn who Hannah-Beast is and what Amanda had to do with her ultimate demise.

The ending was unexpected but not… I was expecting something like what happened but not what actually happened. I did enjoy it I liked the writing and I would go back to see what else Jennifer McMahon has on offer in a full length novel.

Overall if you like a short sharp story that has a bit of a (not so hidden) message about the effects of bullying and guilty consciences this one might be for you!!

I promise this is spooky but not supernatural that is not my jam at all!!

Quick, easy to read horror story. Saw the ending coming a mile away but still a fun read.
