American Street feels like several books all rolled into one: an immigrant story, a love story, a story of violent relationships, a crime story... In the end, it was just a bit too much for me. I most enjoyed the book when it focused on Fabiola's struggle to fit into her new life in America, especially as she fought to hold onto the elements from her old life that brought her comfort. I wish her mother had been a bigger part of the book, because their close relationship, and her struggle getting into the country, were the best parts of the book. In the end, it just felt like Zoboi tried to do too much with this book, and the rushed ending didn't fully serve any of the book's threads.
