Little Universes is a raw, ugly telling of grief and overcoming it. Unlike in other books, the presentation of mental illness and addiction in this book is not romanticized. The author does not make it overly pretty, but shows the true ugliness of the situation. Demetrios is a master at transmitting the characters' pain through the page. As an older sister myself, Hannah and Mae's relationship reached into my chest and squeezed my heart. They reminded me not to take my sister for granted, even when I can't stand her.

There are so many quotes from this book that I will remember as long as I live. Through the characters, the author presents ideas about life, death, grief, beliefs, and the human experience. One that resonated with me is that religion and science can coexist, and that we don't have to believe in just one.

I will say, if you are looking to read just to be entertained, this may not be for you. The book is slow, and it makes you think. But if you appreciate taking a deeper look into life and learning from the experience, I definitely recommend it.

Also, I really appreciated the scientific facts that were sprinkled in throughout Mae's point of view. It's all very fascinating,

Little Universes is one of the best books I have ever read. Can't wait to see more from this author.

this book had an interesting proposal, but the execution was disappointing.

i enjoyed the whole boston setting, but everything else was a mess. it is embarrassing how a white author used harmful stereotypes for the poc characters. when we say we want diverse characters, we mean we want diverse characters with good representation. if the case was harmful stereotypes than no poc characters at all, the second option would have been better.

in addition, mae’s character was extreme insufferable. she constantly talked about astrophysics— that’s her whole personality. she has no flavor at all. it was interesting during the first chapters of the book, but it became excessively repetitive to the point that it’s annoying. demetrios could have had a good nerdy scientist character, but the character still has to have flavor in order to make a character-driven book interesting enough. no one would want to read about astrophysics for almost 500 pages. that’s dull.

if you want a book that constantly talks about physics and racist micro-aggressions, then i guess this is the perfect book for you.

there are so many trigger warnings for this book, so don’t let the cover fool you. it is not a lighthearted book, but rather a dark one. i was shocked reading this as well.
