I read the German translation.
Detailed descriptions of geological shifts, changes and catastrophes. The "downfall" of Japan is put into a science-influenced novel with a plot around a team of scientists and some of the people they meet on the way.
I can recommend this book for science-lovers, for people who like to follow a fictional story that aligns with (real) scientific facts.
This work is highly important for the japanese science-fiction scene but furthermore, even in other countries.
The japanese culture and mindset is displayed, woven into the plot of how the people and the society react to the sinking of Japan. I'm not familiar with the culture, therefor I might not have gotten all the hints and descriptions, all the nuances of the culture in this book.

Consider skipping this "quintessential" Japanese science-fiction novel. I came across it on a Top 10 Japanese SF list, which also included 2 other books by Komatsu. However, neither the prose nor the story structure are very strong. Only the story concept is interesting. But what good is a concept without the execution?
Certainly don't read this book before going to Japan for the first time...

18. september, 2020. Elu on nii, nagu tavaliselt: noored teevad sporti, mängivad arvutimänge, täiskasvanud teevad tööd. Ühel hetkel aga hakkab maa värisema. Mööbel lendab, aknaklaasid purunevad. See on Jaapani Shindo-skaalal seitsmepalline maavärin, kõige tugevam, mis võib üldse olla. Kogu riiki läbib maavärinate ahel, mis raputab kogu riiki. See on lõpu algus.
Niiviisi algab Netflixi sari Japan Sinks: 2020, mis põhineb samanimelisel raamatul. Ma räägin sarjast enne, sest see on raamatust täiesti erinev, kuid on suurepärane lisand. Teleseriaal keskendub perekond Mutole, kes suudab katastroofist hoolimata kokku hoida. Peres on kaks last, tütar Ayumu ja poeg Go. Ja Gol on arvutimängurist sõber Eestist, kes kriitilisel hetkel ütleb, mis ilmakaarde nad hoidma peaks. Sest Jaapani saareriik on uppumas. Üks vale samm võib maksta elu.
Enne seda suurt maavärinat on toimunud mitmed pisemad maavärinad riigi lõunaosas, "mida on tunda olnud isegi Komoros". See koht pani mind mõtlema, sest hei, praegu on aasta 2020 ja maikuus oli Nagano prefektuuris, kus ma isegi elan, palju pisikesi maavärinaid. Ühe kuuga värises siin maa rohkem, kui terve möödunud aasta peale kokku. Komoro on Sakust lühikese rongisõidu kaugusel. Pani natuke mõtlema.
Kui teleseriaal keskendub ühele perele ja nende kogemusele, siis raamat on täiesti teistsugune. Raamatu tegevus keskendub teadlastele, kes peavad uurima ühe kadunud saare juhtumit. Allveelaevasõidud paljastavad muutused Jaapani süvikus ning viib riigi teadmiseni, et Jaapani riik eksisteerib veel võib-olla aasta. Teadlased ja poliitikud on suure probleemi ees: kuidas päästa 110 miljonit saareriigil elavat inimest? mis saab nende rahvusest, kui nende kodumaa kaob igaveseks merepõhja? kuidas tulla toime vulkaanipursetega, mida maapõues toimuv liikumine põhjustab?
Jaapani saarestik eemaldus kunagi laamade liikumise tõttu mandrilt. Jaapani süvik põhjustab aeg-ajalt suuri maavärinaid, sealhulgas ka 2011. aasta Sendai maavärina ja sellega kaasnenud tsunami.
Selles raamatus ja telesarjas mõlemas on väga palju mõtlemapanevaid kohti. Inimloomusest, kultuurist, elust ja surmast. Raamatut lugedes oli mul kõhe tunne, sest Jaapani valitsuse käitumine raamatus meenutas mulle kangesti praeguse valitsuse oma. Mida tähendab olla jaapanlane? Mida tähendab olla eestlane? Kas ma oleksin sellepärast halb inimene, kui ma ei suuda aidata teisi, kuid päästan oma mobiiltelefoni (sest see on ainus viis suhelda inimestega, keda ma armastan)?
Ma olen ikka täiesti emotsionaalselt läbi. Ja mõtlemisainet jätkub pikaks ajaks. Ja loodetavasti ei tule mingit hiiglaslikku maavärinat, mis Fuji mäe purskama paneb. Aga mine sa tea, 2020 on juba selline, ootamatusi täis. Igaks juhuks kontrollin õhtul hädaolukorrakotid üle. Parem karta, kui kahetseda.

The Wikipedia page says the English translation is heavily abridged. I wonder of the fuller version has a bit more character development.
