What did I just read? Clearly there are some references I'm missing. I'm aware of Stanislaw Lem, but don't think I've read any of his work. The sea witch is Le Guin, maybe? Can't think of any other Ursula's. Maybe I would have appreciated it more had I gotten the references. Otherwise I didn't really care for it. And, what was that ending??

What a colossal disappointment it is for a story that started out with such promise to have such a lackluster ending. The literary equivalent of a slap in the face out of the clear blue.

The moral of this story simply does not sit right with me, especially given how women are all but expected to "give a chance" to men they don't have feelings for simply because the men are so very in love with them. This mindset is actively harmful to women and men alike.

The fact that most reviewers here are acknowledging this is the only positive part of this short story.

Definitely enjoyable to read, but shallow in a way that lampshading the shallowness doesn't change too much about it.

I learned a lot from the comments on this one as number of the characters are apparently based on real sci-fi authors and their works. While I didn’t have this knowledge going in to be able pick up on the references, it’s still a fun read whether or not you can recognize these folks.
It’s a fantastical love story along with a humorous sci-fi — how exactly does a gas giant expect to co-exist with a star? It’s fun, it’s meta, and there’s lots of great tidbits for astronomy fans.

A little disappointing at the end, but I did enjoy the overall meta-ness of this little story.
