I adored this one. Captured some great new adult feels.

The art in this is amazing and I like the character concepts but this felt very simplistic to me. It did the thing I hate, where valid things causes someone to over react, and then only the over reaction is looked at. I wish Cass and Lana had a more complex situation than “Lana needs to learn how to be nice”. It felt very simplistic in this way. I do know this is a series, but honestly, it hasn’t done much to hook me. However, it’s cute, sweet, and has great rep. I think the party realistically refelects long term players vs new ones. In terms of dnd accuracy…it varies. Shatter is almost completely inverted mechanically, where it’s a touch attack instead of an AOE save, so the details you can spot as a 5e player vary.

There’s a lot of fun in this if you know D&D, and a lot of good queer representation, though it all wraps up very simplistically.

If you’re looking for a feel-good, heartwarming story about dungeons, dice, and the power of friendship, this collection is for you. It has clever writing and killer graphics and showcases some great character work in Lana, Cass, Walter, Drew, Shen, and Jay.

RPGs are safe places where people can become something outside of themselves, and I loved the way queer stories were woven into this series. I loved the way they weren’t the focus of the story, too, just kind of there for all of us to see—queer people exist in RPG places.

There’s something so freeing about putting on a “second skin” and becoming warriors and rogues and spellcasters and taking off the responsibilities of the world around us. Anything goes in a fantasy world—you can be your best, worst, or most authentic self.

It’s obvious the collaborators love RPGs, and the game is woven so perfectly into the out-of-game main conflict of the story that I felt immediately immersed in the world. The reality of feeling things slip away and wanting so desperately to hold onto them is such a real feeling, and the authors plucked at my heartstrings and made me ache for the game I never got to finish and the friends who are so far-flung now.

I’d recommend this to anyone who wants something light to read with surprising depth.
