A pretty fun graphic novel about what it's like aboard tall ships. The art is great and the content was really interesting and unique. I wish it went into even more detail about life at sea, but maybe that will come in future issues :)

3.5 stars. Fun, fluffy comics about sailing. That's... all I have to say, really.

I loved the illustrations, but was not the biggest fan of the sporadic nature of the vignettes. I wanted more information about Lucy's experiences on the ship, but instead it was more a random series of musings, including bits on history mixed with Lucy's current experiences. There were informative and fun segments about scurvy, tattoos, and one historical episode of the original ship in Japan.

The scurvy bit was a little on the gory side.

This was a fun dive into tall boat sailing. I thought this would have more of a narrative/memoir approach, but it's actually presented in snippets, almost pamphlets, about different aspects of sailing culture and history. Despite its brevity, I feel like I learnt a lot and Bellwood's passion for this subject is evident.

The artwork is clean, fun and colourful, though it's evident that this collection is made up of comics she made over the course of several years as the quality does vary.

I really hope Bellwood comes out with longer and more widely published works in the future. I would love to read more by her.

This is the beautiful result of Lucy Bellwood's highly successful kickstarter campaign last year. This book collects Bellwood's tall-ship sailing comics all together in color with a new story about the real scourge of the high seas: scurvy! A gorgeous anthology, and now available to order in hardback from comic book stories anywhere.

There are two things in life I love: tall ships and comics. Lucy Bellwood's Baggywrinkles combines both of those things. Bonus points for the fact that she's a fellow Oregonian! Hurray! If you even remotely like sea stories, or are interested in tall ships or if you just like comics, stop everything and read this now.

A collection of comic "essays" about tall ships, incorporating history lessons and her own experiences. Her enthusiasm for tall ships comes through. I would have liked a few more essays or one-pagers to flesh it out a bit more - one more autobio essay at the end would have helped round it out and make it feel more of its own thing than a collection of smaller things.

This graphic novel was an interesting look at life on a ship. Different stories about some of the author's first experiences on a ship and educational stories for the reader to know some of the 'lingo'.

"Fathoms, now standardized at six feet, were originally determined by 'the length of a man's arms around the object of his affections'" (p.34).
On pages 106-107 the capybara and guinea pig scenes were so cute! :D

I didn't know what I was picking up when I grabbed this at the library. I was just looking for a quick read, and while this lived up to that I also learned a thing or two about nautical history, which I didn't even realize was so interesting!
