DNF at the moment. The writing is immaculate but the story isn't engaging me as much. I find this a shame because I really would have loved to love Soyinka. Maybe one day I'll pick it up again

This is super good, Soyinka is a wonderful writer. He has so beautifully conveyed what his life was like as a child, and very cleverly restricted his story to telling only what he knew as a child. The scene where a young Soyinka follows along behind a marching band and gets lost is delightful.

I found this book boring and hard to understand at some points : evdral characters have multiple weird names and seem to talk to themselves for entire chapters, and god, the chapters were soooooo long

I love books about kids who cause trouble who grow up to be adults who cause trouble.

A little too slow-paced and dense for me, but tells an interesting story of an influential figure. I was invested in a few moments but bored in most others.

A very interesting book about a priviledged boy growing up in Nigeria. This memoir allows the reader to see how life was for locals under British colonial rule, and how that began to break down.
