Eh.

Nothing beats the first one. That one was pure gold. I think what hinders this series is that there is no conflict or issues between Adele and Gareth. There is also really no character development or development at all (main characters and supporting characters). Things just happen and you just plow through it without reason. Also, gonna be blunt, I think Gareth's secret identity should have been an ongoing thing and not be revealed so early on (aka first book). It would have set up some conflict.

Gareth and his emo phase ticked me off throughout this book. I honestly wanted Adele to let him chill out in the monestary while she was kick ass and killed vampires without his assistance. That's how fed up I got.

I think the geomancy and the ideas they have for vampires are interesting, so I'm always holding out hope that the books will be the books that I want them to be... and the main characters will get more character development. Time will tell.

It is a rare occasion when I cannot finish a book. However, this was one of those times. I could not wrap my brain around the world building - possibly because it is a spin off from another series by the same author and I have not read that. I also had a difficult time keeping track of the various characters - who they were, what there powers were, who they were allied with, etc.
