in short, the most impactful and thought provoking novel i have ever read. rushdie masterfully weaves the fraught history of a nation with the fraught history of a man, of many men, of all men throughout india and pakistan during this period. i learned a lot while reading this book and did have to do some further research, mainly out of curiosity. but i’ve never read an author so capable of making a work so whole; the way each motif persists, each character has fully fleshed out arcs and everything is tied together with a neat little bow while leaving up so much room for interpretation and thought is remarkable to say the least.

Not even gonna try explaining what this book is about, as it's impossible to be summarised in one line...

Many of the names of characters, fabrics, some deities were so foreign to me that it was hard to keep them all straight.  My problem was that I was truly  trying to learn these cultural differences when out of the blue, he would change the name of the characters on us making it too onerous to read. Another thing that  was irritating was the plot was too surreal.  It was almost like the author would dream up a plot twist, throw it in the middle, and then forget about it and continue as if nothing happened.  It just wasn't my thing.

Super slow because of writing style with 'authorial interjections' + rambling, non-linear descriptions. Just not for me.
