This is the second story in the Moses Lake series.
In this second book, Heather is an architect from Seattle working on large commercial properties.

Her father’s family comes from Moses Lake and she travels there when she finds out her mother missed the appointment to sign the property deal papers with the lawyer.

She gets caught up in a travel nightmare, flight cancelled, Greyhound bus and when she leaves her handbag on the bus, she ends up getting a lift with a kind dentist to get home.

At home her family is evasive about their plans. Heather is very suspicious but no one will let her in on the secret. Only towards the end of the story is the reason revealed.

The feeling I mostly got from this book is the distance that she has from all of those around her, how she cut herself off from others after her father’s death, not quite understanding what happened or blanking it all out.

It’s a powerful story about grief and trauma and I felt so happy when she got answers to the mysteries surrounding the past. This is not a cutesie love story, there is a lot of emotion and sadness and demons to be dealt with.
