The Blue Box is formally experimental in the way that Hemingway's In Our Time was formally experimental -- if Hemingway had been funny. This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Whether it's literalizing familiar metaphors ("Who Will Stand the Test of Time?") or playing around with worn-out tropes ("When the Monster is Actively Moving Toward You - How to Start the Car"), you can feel Ron Carlson's pure imaginative force at work. And for such a slim volume it packs a wealth of commentary on writing, love, and recommendation letters.

Highly recommended.
