This was almost a 5 star read for me! This is a modern classic that is phenomenal! I love the discussions of life in WW2 while living in France. Although this book is fiction, it open the discussion of generational wealth, the bourgeois class, and the occupation in France leading up to WW2 and during WW2. I learned new things that I never learned in school about this time period. The writing is great..but truly what made this an even better book was the complex characters and the tense scenes and discussions taking place in the novel. Highly recommend everyone gives this book a try

Reflections on guilt, the price of action and inaction, meaning, solidarity and moral obligation, set among the French Resistance. One for everyone pondering inaction over genocides in 2024 for sure.

"she existed with him, with Marcel, with Madeleine, Laurent, Yvonne, with all the unknown human beings who slept in wooden huts and who had never heard her name, with all those who longed for a different tomorrow, even with those who did not know how to long for anything. The shell had burst open; she existed for something, for someone. The whole earth was one fraternal unity"

Does anything actually matter?
Am I even real?

Safe to say this book broke me in more ways than one. Simone you twisted and talented woman (bonus point for naming an amazingly brave female character after your younger sister).

An incredible love story. Much more than a love story. A song to freedom.
