Reviews with content warning for Death - Funny, You Don't Look Autistic: A Comedian's Guide to Life on the Spectrum

This book was not groundbreaking. The author is in his 20’s and hasn’t had any life changing experiences. Other than him being autistic, he had lived a fairly average life and I don’t really feel a memoir of his was necessary. I don’t think he’s particularly well known as Ive never heard of him, but I could be wrong. I most of his jokes I didn’t really find funny although, I admit that is completely a me problem not a book problem.

I appreciate what the book did with educating people about autism as well as showing an autistic perspective to the everyday. I liked the conversational tone of the book and the audiobook gave off podcast vibes and I really enjoyed listening to it. I think this book is great at breaking stigma about autism and showing one very specific perspective on what life was like for this one person on the spectrum. I also appreciate how short this was, it didn’t last long enough for it to feel like a chore.

Overall this book didn’t really need to happen. Maybe a slight waste of time but I still enjoyed it well enough and I at no point did I feel I actively disliked anything that was being said. 3 stars.

Michael McCreary was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at the age of 5. At the age of 14 he would perform his first stand-up gig using his experience and pain as his material. Funny, You Don't Look Autistic is his attempt to bring understanding and awareness towards ASD for both those on and off the spectrum.

💭 T H O U G H T S

This is an own voices memoir offering an inside glimpse into living with autism from a first-hand source. It's short and basic, but offers a helpful guide for anyone new to navigating the world of autism. The information certainly isn't overwhelming, but remains educational. Michael uses his experience to debunk some myths relating to ASD, and also inform the audience that one person with ASD is one person with ASD. While the ending felt a bit rushed, there really was no way to tidy up the tragedy that struct Michael's family.

I'd definitely recommend listening to the audio, as the author's narration adds a dimension to the reading experience, although there are some pictures and diagrams in the physical book that aren't in the audio, or require going to a website.
