As Kelly Barnhill is one of my favorite authors, I was really looking forward to another fairytale-esque story! I love the complexity of this, as it was a bit more difficult to navigate immediately then some of her other books (namely, The Girl Who Drank the Moon and The Witch's Boy). It was a slow process of revealing new information, but it wasn't confusing in the slightest. I loved the choice of narrator - having him as someone in the story with his own motives and opinions of the characters, even though it was an omniscient viewpoint. The one negative thing I have to say is that the ending was very chaotic. It was a bit difficult to tell what was going on, and it also felt very open-ended.
Moderate: Blood, Death, Grief, and War
