Magical, intelligent, and surprising!

This is a book that I read literally based on the cover alone. I did not read the cover flap or any reviews. So I started reading with a blank slate, no expectations, and I was so entranced by the world and
characters created.

This is definitely a character driven book, which are the kind I like. I would rather have pages and pages of description and character development than actual plot. The characters throughout this novel all became so clear, by the end I was sad to say goodbye.

The perspective shifts between characters and very close time periods (all within a decade of each other), until everything culminates in the end. Generally, I can figure out where a plot is going, but this book was so different. I just loved it. It was refreshing!

enjoyment: 6/10 quality of writing: 8/10 page count: 512 what a fantastical book. solidly written. i truly did feel transported to another world and another time, it felt a little like a dream. i did get a bit bored about halfway through and i will admit the hetero star crossed lovers thing is not very compelling to me but there was a lot more to the book than that that i did enjoy. i’ve never really read anything like this before. definitely a book i’d recommend if you’re into historical fantasy.

This review will be short. I hesitated to pick this up because it was being sold as a love story. While there is love in it, they are a great many loves. First and foremost is a love story to the more fantastical things in we dream of. This is a love story about a place, and then the people inside of it. The characters are complex and wonderful, as are their relationship with each other and the circus itself. A wonderful read
