Probably my favourite of the 3 Max Porter books I have read recently, but the ending still fell a bit flat for me. I loved the lyrical poetry of the descriptions which Porter excels at, Lanny was such an interesting character, the English village setting was great, Papa Toothwort was a deliciously creepy character. Part 2 was the standout, such a funny, clever and illuminating way of writing that is so interesting to read.

I loved the contrast between Lanny, a sweet boy whose world is still limitless, and the chorus of anonymous villagers judging, boasting, gossipping, and narrowing the bounds of acceptability. Having the villagers read in different voices was a big plus of the audiobook version; you could really feel the collective scorn being heaped on.

Good grief. That was warming, fantastical, dark, eerie, horrifying and heart-wrenching. Both loved this and was frightened by it. There was one part that straight-up disturbed me (not sure how necessary it was), but the rest of it was wonderful and so dreamlike.
I’ve never been so fascinated by a fantasy/god/spirit character as I was by Dead Papa Toothwort. Big chunk of inspiration here: thanks Max!

Some brilliant concepts but the unfortunate habit of relying on them as gimmicks. Seems to be rated highly by people who don't read much fantasy, where this wouldn't make as much of a ripple. Good bones but not as original as it believes itself to be.

Weird, but pleasant.
