Short biographical sketches that fill gaps of what you may know about the founding of our country.
Thankful these women wrote letters!

I was excited to read this when we chose it for a book club selection one year. However, it was quite a disappointment to me. I think I didn't even finish it. Cokie Roberts' writing style was both rambling and repetitive; she was attempting to link together the "founding mothers" through their letters and journals, but there was no clear direction in the narrative and I found myself feeling like I had just read the same thing several pages previously, or wondering what was the point of it all. There were some interesting bits of history to glean from the book, but in the end I felt like I really didn't learn anything about the women of the colonial period as I wanted to do.

This. Was. A. Chore. I had to read this for our book club, but I should have skipped it. This would have been interesting if it were authored by a better writer. I got lost and stopped paying attention to who's who by the first 20% of the book. A better format for this type of nonfiction would have been subject by subject rather than chronological.
I listened along to the audiobook alongside reading it, and they're different texts! The audiobook skipped around and lost about two hours of text. Not to mention, it was read by Cokie herself, and I'm sorry, but her voice was a bit too brassy.

Listened via Hoopla. This one is fine as an audiobook when you can only listen to snippet here or there. Lots of little stories that you can get in small bites.

I wish I could have given this more stars; I had high hopes for it. While I thought the information was very good, I found the presentation hard to follow. It jumped around a lot for me. Also, thought the commentary from the author was annoying or I disagreed with it (I'm not a history expert, but sometimes I thought she put a twist on things where there wasn't much basis). I'm curious if her other books are similar to this one.

I felt like this book had a good message, but that it was poorly delivered. I couldn't see it as a historical book, because she threw in so many modern references and ideas, yet it wasn't a story because she tried to write it as more of a historical type book. Plus she kept bringing up the flaws of the men (which I know they had), but it got a little old after a while to read about them over and over.

At first I really enjoyed Roberts' more casual approach to historical biography...she frequently places "reactions" like "Yeah, right" or "I'll bet" or "Go Abigail!" to various letters and quotes that she has shared. However, as it went on, it felt all over the place. I appreciated that she tried to organize the chapters and subsequent stories chronologically, but I think it would have flowed better if she had focused on one "founding mother" at a time. Overall, it had interesting things I didn't know about that era, but will not be coming back to it.
