Entertaining, might make a fun movie, thought provoking about how sapiens could possibly evolve. Believable, in the story telling.

A strong beginning, but weaker second half.

I thoroughly liked it. From the plot to the characters to the writing to the science and politics, it was all good and plausible. I have hope!

I'll give Greg Bear credit for a great idea, exhaustive research, and a fascinating bit of speculative fiction, but something about his writing just puts me off. The characters make me cringe and want to put the book down. His descriptions grate on my sensibilities. I don't feel like my time was wasted reading this, but I won't be seeking out any more books by this author.

Gets a bit slow with scientific explanations (who needs science? bah!), but a great premise. Darwin's Children wasn't as good.

This book was great, Greg Bear does real science based science fiction.

I expected sci-fi and got speculative fiction, so things went downhill as soon as I started this book. I was driven absolutely crazy by the author's (and characters') insistence on calling female scientists "Ms." or "Mrs." and male scientists "Dr." I found it really distracting and kind of infuriating.

Some of the wild speculation about evolutionary "mechanism" also bothered me. I liked it enough to finish it. The imagination of the "Homo sapiens novus" phenotype was pretty interesting, so I guess I'm glad I stuck with it that long.

Found this book a bit difficult to get into, as the story goes in depth with descriptions of genetics and biology. Most of it was way over my head. I enjoyed it enough, however, to start the second book Darwin's Children.
