It wasn't terribly good, definitely not the author's best piece of work, but it wasn't terribly bad either. It was average and the ending was a tad bit disappointing with the way the conflict and the climax were solved and resolved.

Rather weak entry, though the end was better then the first 100 or so pages. I'd say the story was dated, but I think that was intentional. There is no real grabber for me here. I finished it because it's Follett, and he tells a good story.

I wanna give it 4.5 but we know Goodreads doesn’t do that.

This one took me a bit longer than other Follett novels and it was missing some of his signature characters/style, like the powerful female lead, or the dynamics he creates where the reader finds themself rooting for opposing characters. However it was of course an incredible read still and the suspenseful moments had me holding my breath, on the edge of my seat.

The story line at the beginning was a bit more convoluted, usually Follett does an exceptional job carrying on multiple storylines in a really cohesive way, I got a little bit jumbled and there was even a bit I didn’t quite understand in the epilogue (even after scouring the book for an explanation).

With all that being said, any historical fiction, historical thriller, or Follett enthusiast will enjoy this book. His writing is as enticing and intriguing as ever and he tackles a different time period than his previous novels which is cool to read him tell a story from a different time.

And it’s inspired by true events! I love Ken Follett and will read anything he writes but this book is nevertheless compelling and entertaining on its own.
