A lovely lovely collection of profiles of ten Singaporeans and the unconventional work they do in credential-obsessed Singapore. From filmmaker Anthony Chen and Bjorn Low of Edible Garden City, to Cai Yinzhou and Shabir Tabare Alam, these ten individuals remind us that work is not only about money and status, but can (should?) also be about purpose, passion and meaning. Some of these individuals deliberately chose an unconventional route because they were very clear where their passions and convictions lay; for others, it was more a case of stumbling onto what is now their life's work or being given a chance to make good. It's an inspiring read and a good reminder that there are more career possibilities out there than the usual white collar suspects.

Also, who knew that Boon Tong Kee Chicken Rice has an additive that reduces its glycemic index??

This is a really good collection of everyday stories about everyday Singaporeans who stuck to their guns about what they wanted to do, and charted their own paths.

Melanie Lee is a genius at curating meaningful stories, I appreciated every feature in this book.

Anthony Chen, the only boy in his Hwa Chong cohort who didn’t want to go to a junior college to the distress of his family. As a teenager, Singapore’s best known, award-winning filmmaker already knew what he wanted.

Eugenia Ong loved the sciences and was a bright student headed for medical school. When that did not happen, the pragmatic person she was - went for plan B to study biological sciences. Today, she’s involved in trials related to Covid-19.

We are a sum of our experiences, as Melanie says in her preface, and whether you already have a childhood dream job - this book is about “making authentic choices despite hardship and societal pressures.”

This is a book that’s both inspiring and pragmatic, quite a Singaporean quality where we just keep going on. Definitely worth a read, I’ve bought my own copy for the teens ❤️
