You can’t listen to this book and not feel deeply frustrated by the US legal system. Or just infuriated.

The organization, breadth, and narrative of this book really worked for me. The book is a devastating read and I couldn't put it down.

It occasionally bounced back and forth in ways that wandered and was sometimes hard to follow in audio form, but it focused on a wider historical net than I'd expected

Truly heartbreaking! I thought that at first this would be about how two criminals bilked Mississippi and sent an untold number of men and women to prison. It is that but, how they managed to do that was (and is) a feature not a bug and is not contained to just Mississippi.
Given what we know about police targeting the poor and people of color and prosecutorial discretion that hurts the same, this is one more hurdle poor and black people have to just enjoy the freedoms I was taught all Americans have by the grace of God.

I can't believe how recently these horrible people were allowed to control investigations.
