Dense, elliptical glimpses of New York inhabitants. Very little introspection. Most of the characters are seen from outside, like laboratory specimens. Some stories have no protagonists: for example, one story is an essayistic piece about fashion with no actual characters. A dry, cool narrative voice makes for an unusual but extremely rewarding collection.

I'll admit, I did lightly skim over some stories. I definitely enjoyed some more than others.
