Thank you so much to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for the ARC of this contemporary YA Mamma Mia retelling! When aspiring musical actress Millie stumbled across her dad’s Livejournal account, she finds 3 women who could just possibly be her mom. As she searches for her mom, she pursues her Broadway dream and clashes with her high school rival.

I’ll be honest, I picked up this book because once upon a time I was a Livejournal user and I still have dear friends I made on that platform. I was ready for pure chaos and shenanigans. I definitely found a lot of chaos and cheesiness, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a sweet and entertaining story as well.

Engaging in this book takes a strong suspension of disbelief as the plot is frankly nonsensical. But if you can wade through the musical references, the romance between Millie and her “rival” in is super cute and there are some genuinely clever twists at the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself reading this book, but I do wonder how well it will age. There’s practically a pop culture reference on every other page… Someday, will kids be writing papers on all of this like we do The Great Gatsby now? Or will it be too confusing and dated?

While nothing will ever quite make my heart sing like Tweet Cute, Emma Lord's third novel, When You Get the Chance, is a love letter to theater and a fun twist on the classic Mamma Mia! story that made me laugh and eagerly wait to see who her mother would be. Though the story has a family angle, it mostly focuses on Millie trying to escape her own shadow and ideas of herself to unravel what she wants in the summer before senior year and who she most wants to become. There is, of course, a swoony enemies to lovers romance in the midst! I definitely wish we'd gotten a little more Oliver, because the two of them had sparks flying throughout! Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Millie's story and encountering all the new people in her life who help make it - and her - so much better.

This book was so fun! I could definitely see the Mama Mia-ness, since Millie was searching for her mom(s) after finding out about them in her dad's old 'diary', or in this case his old angsty blog. I thought that Millie was a pretty decent character, even though she did get on my nerves occasionally. And Oliver was pretty cute! No complaints there.

Emma Lord's books are just rays of sunshine wrapped in rainbows.  And I love them.

But this one is my favourite by far.   If you are like me and slightly musical theater obsessed, PICK UP THIS BOOK!!!  I promise that you will thank me.

I was squealing at all of the niche references.  (Still obsessed that Sutton Foster was referenced.)

But besides me nerding out, the actual story itself was so sweet and heartwarming.  It almost brought me to tears a few times.  I loved seeing Millie's jorney and how she changes because of it.

In short, I will never stop singing Emma Lord's praises and I will also never stop recommending this book!!  I'm obsessed!!
