A sort of slice of life meets paranormal. I liked it, but wasn't overly thrilled by it.

This book had such an interesting premise and it did not disappoint!  Tying together present with past, Mercury tells the stories of Tara and Josey whose lives both changed with the introduction of a gold-seeking necklace.  Where Josey is concerned with romance, Tara is concerned with money: their livelihood is at stake.  But where will they find it, and what if their parents reject it?

With beautiful black and white panels that effortlessly go between the past and present narratives, Larson's manner of storytelling is intriguing and creative, allowing the audience to pull their own conclusions.

It's fast-paced and mystifying--a pair that can never go wrong.  This is perfect for those interested in delving into magical realism or are dealing with hard family times and what it means to have a home.

I picked this up basically by the cover...and was beyond pleasantly surprised. I loved the interchange of time periods/family stories, I loved that it was part mystery, part thriller and part romance...and I loved the characters even the stern, preternatural mother of Josey. I really couldn't put it down...I read it in one sitting!

This is great - sophisticated story-telling, good characters, nice atmosphere. There should be hundreds or thousands more comics this good - this should be the mainstream. That said, its worth noting that it is a YA book, and the characters are mostly teens - people who are allergic to that kind of thing may want to steer clear. But if they do, they're missing a very fine comic, streets ahead of most 'mature' comics currently out there. If I had one slight criticism it's that some of the characters can look a touch too similar (although the characters that are meant to look alike I had no trouble telling apart, despite their similarity). Otherwise, this is excellent stuff.

Cute and somewhat interesting. I liked the back-and-forth between present day and olde timey (fictional) French Hill. It was fun to see Nova Scotianisms in print ("dinner = lunch" indeed! And I didn't even know that King of Donair was a chain and existed outside Halifax).
The semi-romantic thread with Tara and... umm... Pak? Doppeltara was fairly well done, I thought.
SpoilerI thought the extreme magical bit at the end felt a little tacked-on, but didn't really ruin the story for me. At least it was brief.
