I waited a few days after reading to write a review for this book. I really wanted to sit on it and reflect. This book is beautifully written, the authors have a wonderful writing style and the imagery is SO incredibly vivid. I particularly love the description of food at Selena’s diner. The characters are incredibly distinct and multidimensional, even the so called villain. This book is Stardust if Stardust was a lighthearted teen novel about a ridiculous town and a local beauty pageant. So nothing like stardust except for the star falling to earth! That said, this is a well written books that beautifully exemplifies stories of women of color. My only gripe with the book is that I was hoping for more of a storyline centered on
Chicky’s sexuality beyond just coming out. I wish Chicky would have come out earlier in the book although I recognize that would have not allowed the same build up. I appreciate books about LGBT characters that don’t get stuck in the closest so to say. Also was I the only one slightly disappointed Chicky didn’t confess to a childhood crush on Lita?
Overall, I’d highly recommend this book for a lighthearted read centered on friendship! While there is some romance, don’t go into it expecting it, it’s far from the central story. It’s a cute read and easy enough to read in a day or two. Support some wonderful Latinx authors!!!!

This was a really fun read! It was a total mood booster and reminded me how powerful bravery and community are. There were a lot of really complex and topical issues addressed within this book that I so appreciate. It addresses things like racism and homophobia, and intersectional experiences of being queer and a woman of color through the experiences of character Chicky. These characters were SO lovable and adorable, that may have been my favorite part about the book was how much I grew to love the main characters and their crew of friends. The plot was very well paced making this a fun read that went by really fast. I also so appreciated the allegorical effects of the space alien setting and characters as a metaphor for aspects of the Latinx experience. It is an empowering twist on the idea of Latinx people in the US as “aliens,” and I found that artistic point to be really beautiful and it added a lot of interesting insight to the character development of Lita. The only thing keeping this from a 5 star rating is that it does tend to be a little cheesy and overly reflective for my taste.
I also was surprised at how casually the friends acted when seeing Lita as a stardust figure? I feel that was way too casually mentioned to be believable.
