One of the best books I’ve read in years, filled with incredibly developed characters and flawless writing. I went into this uncertain of this story would add to the original book (which is also a favorite of mine!), but now I’ve been entirely converted. The depth of the knowledge Kingsolver displays here (about the place, the time, the people, the drug epidemic) is what makes this work. That and the utter humanity with which she writes all combine to make this greater than a rewrite!!

I rarely (ever?) feel this way, but actually think every American should read this book.

What a beautiful written book, it captivated me from beginning ton end, although I am not going to lie, it was hard to read at some parts, but because of the subject matter, not because of the prose, these poor kids having to grow up so fast but really still being kids, being used and abused by the exact people who should love them the more, when Demon said how bitter he was because he was the one who had to leave their house even though he is the one who had done nothing wrong, so true, so sad, but still he was resilient and did what he had to do, and the ending was oh so beautiful.
