Loved this book... though, fair warning, it is quite gorey. It's like reading a hollywood Zombie movie. :)

It was alright. Felt this was very eerily familiar. But also. This is a boy book.

Much better than the film. Max Brooks knows his zombie stuff, and it shows.
The problem with an oral history like this is the lack of immediacy. Much of the zombie thrill comes from the shock and grotesquery of the living dead screaming in your face. A book based around historical interviews, while certainly more intelligent, is also less interesting thereby. It creates distance by nature.
Certainly worth reading, though. It provokes speculation.

I honestly don't know how to even rate this. The stories were actually interesting at times, but the fact that every interview sounded like the same person talking about a different thing irked me. I probably wouldn't have disliked this book so much if every interviewee had been given a different voice/writing style.

I wanted to love this book; it came highly recommended by friends whose opinions I respect. But as other reviewers have mentioned, I feel that the format itself -- Q&A interviews with a myriad of survivors -- hampers the story. It's impossible to become emotionally invested with any character because you'll only be with him/her for 3 pages or so, reading about what s/he experienced during the Zombie War.

There's no story arc, no character development, no climactic ending -- ultimately, it's just a bunch of interviews. What I thought would be a quick and enjoyable read ended up feeling like a long slog through a cold swamp.

I'm giving it two stars simply for its unique and imaginative take on Armageddon, zombie-style. There's no doubt that this was well-researched and imagined in minute detail; the format simply wasn't my cup of tea.
