Animals romp through a pond as they make a variety of noises and interact with each other. Each page features a few short descriptive words that either rhyme or create an engaging rhythm. Readers can words with children to develop phonological awareness or develop vocabulary about different animals.

Honestly I don't live the art on these, I think the animals can look a bit creepy. But the tone and rhythm are great.

Beautiful illustration and vocabulary combined create a pond experience to remember. This book helps a child learn what to love before a nature experience, or conversely, allows them to see the creativity brought to such an experience set down in a book. The vocabulary is a delight and one I would want a child to activate into their own spoken and written language.

The pictures are a little bit strange but it is a good book for storytime because it is full of action.

Not a bad concept for a kid's picture book. Kind of a circle of life/turn of the seasons as seen in a small pond. But the colors were garish, the art was blocky, the writing overly simple. And I expect more from a Caldecott Honor.

Rhyming couplets feature the actions of animals and insects around a pond on a cold night.
