With the wintry isolated setting, a tense party of old friends, and toxic female friendships, I was reminded a lot of Ruth Ware's In a Dark, Dark Wood. I preferred this one. Didn't love it though.

I liked the plot structure. I really like dual timelines, and the decision to withhold the victim's identity. And how so many characters felt like legitimate suspects. If you want a book with likeable characters, keep looking. I think this is the aspect of the genre that stops me from truly loving it. The mystery keeps me reading, but I never get all that invested in the characters.

This was really well done. I did not see the twist coming though I probably should have.. couldn’t put this down towards the end and already want to read more! This was different from the Guest List and the Paris Apartment in how closely entangled everyone was before the fateful trip / event but I appreciated the same style of switching timelines and POVs.. all together makes for a v interesting story!

Would have been five stars if certain characters were punished more severely by the end.

A compelling set-up; a guest being murdered in a snowed-in country estate; which didn't quite give me the pay off I was after.

Lucy Foley brings together some of the world's worst people to a New Year's Eve party in a remote part of Scotland; alongside a couple from Iceland and the withdrawn staff. Despite the short chapters and multiple perspectives; this just didn't suck me in. None of the characters had very much depth (rugged groundskeeper with a dark past, grieving fleeing manager, woman with the 'perfect' life, woman hiding a secret from her oldest friends, woman desperate to break into the friendship group) and there's minimal growth within the pages. Even the final reveal is just...meh.

I've seen so many people talk about Foley's work, so maybe this just wasn't a good place to start - but I can't say I'm rushing to read more.

There's an addictive quality to Lucy Foley's thrillers, and this one was no exception. Somehow I hated the characters while simultaneously feeling sorry for them - especially Miranda. Although I started the book hoping she was the one who died, I ended it wishing that she had had the chance to build a new life for herself. I also appreciated how neatly the various storylines tied together, it made for a really satisfying resolution.

Quick read but ultimately not for me. The quality of writing just isn’t there and many of the characters are unnecessary to the plot, sometimes even disappearing for chapters at a time. Characters are also shallow, and the number of red herrings/loose threads is annoying (why is the serial killer even mentioned??)
