The Hunting Party. A group of old friends on holiday in the remote Scottish Highlands for New Years. What could go wrong? Well apparently a lot can go wrong in this scenario, from being snowed in due to brutal weather conditions to murder among friends. Lucy Foley had me gripped from the start, I realised pretty early on that there was something wrong with this group of old friends, I just didn’t know what. From Emma “accidentally” booking Katie’s seat in a different coach to Miranda’s over eagerness with the pills and alcohol.
This group of friends seemed more frenemies than anything else. The only one who seemed constantly chipper is Emma who coincidentally planned the trip in the first place being as she called herself the “newbie” of the group by a decade. I did have some concerns about her further into the novel when Heather, the person in charge at the Highland retreat said that she appeared to be a budget Miranda. Down to the same hair shade it seemed a bit creepy as if she wanted to be her.
I actually believed it was probably Emma who killed Miranda but I also suspected Doug, I know it was what could be considered to be the easy target with his history but it seemed like it could’ve been him in all honesty.
I did of course find out it was Emma, who stalked Miranda and stole little momentos from her.
In the end she gets away with it pretty much due to being a psychopath.
After all of this though I really loved the novel, I loved the choice of setting, the descriptions of the area, the false sense of togetherness the characters had. It was all really great writing and I hope to enjoy more of Lucy’s novels in the future.
