Talasyn is the Lachis’ka, like crown princess of the Nenavar Dominion, a mostly isolationist island country that she just learned she was the heir of. Previously, she was an orphan fighting for the Sardovian All-Fold, a group of kingdoms on the continent fighting the Hurricane Wars against the Night Empire AKA Kesath. Alaric is the Night Emperor, having recently taken over the role from his father Gaheris for an unknown reason. Gaheris is a creepy scheming guy who wants to kill Talasyn and take over Nenavar; his most recent plan involves using a creature stolen from Nenavar, a sariman bird which eliminates shadow and light magic in its presence, to take away Talasyn’s magic and pave the way for him taking Nenavar. For now, Talasyn and Alaric have to work together to merge their magic to stop the Moonless Dark, a night where all seven moons eclipse and the Voidfell Sever, basically a geyser of death magic, erupts and wipes out Nenavar and possibly the Night Empire as well. The end of the book left the two separated for now, with Talasyn to soon follow Alaric back to the Continent to be crowned Night Empress. Other characters include Ideth Vela, commander of what remains of the Sardovian fleet that is hidden in Nenavar (Talasyn hopes to lead a campaign with them to overthrow the Night Empire). Also Urduja, Talasyn’s grandmother and the ruler of Nenavar; she is on the side of her kingdom and dynasty, and kind of against Talasyn and helping the Sardovians because of it. Prince Elagbi is Talasyn’s dad, a nice guy but he won’t stand up to his mom for her. Khaede is Talasyn’s pregnant friend from the Sardovian army, presumed dead/captured in war; Alaric promises to try and find her for Talasyn when they part at the end of the book. Hanan Ivralis is Talasyn’s dead mom, an outsider that married into the Nenavar royal family, also a Lightweaver who tried to send aid to the Lightweaver nation on the continent before they were destroyed by the Night Empire (against the wishes of Urduja) — the aid was unsuccessful and it resulted in Nenavar not wanting to help the war anymore
