A book for when you need it, the non-traditional family and trepidation of meeting Grace's father's new family are well-portrayed. A younger reader had some difficulty with the father leaving, but children from single-parent homes may find catharsis in the love parents still feel for their daughter.

Wow! What a beautiful book. love the story, and the art is amazing. this is a positive take on a blended family situation, a great way to help children learn about it, or see others going through what they are, and that it's not all bad.

A great example of nontraditional families in picture books! The author deals with a split family elegantly, and the reader can't doubt that Grace is loved by everyone in her family, no matter where they are. The story also subtly touches on African culture, introducing something that may seem exotic to a young child.

As with [b:Amazing Grace|765193|Amazing Grace|Mary Hoffman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1347335253s/765193.jpg|1831295], the author handles a delicate situation very well.

Grace worries that her family isn't a "real" family because it doesn't look like the ones she sees in books. A trip to visit her father in Africa helps her see that there are all kinds of ways to make a family.

Without patronizing young readers, this story addresses strong emotions around the nature of family and a sense of belonging. Beautiful illustrations.
