While I was intrigued but the topic, I have seen a movie that has a very similar plot line (though I don't think the two are related). I also found the writing rather childish. It was relatively enjoyable though.

This book was just eh for me. I didn't like the main character because she was so out of her mind for her best friend that she couldn't be with.

There were a couple parts in the book that I was shocked that the author took the story in that direction but I think it made the story not predictable.

Not sure how this one will fly with being an Abe.

This was a strange read. I struggle to understand the purpose or message of the story and I question the author’s intent with some of the choices made narratively. The book has a fair share of emotional moments and I cared for all the characters but most of their arcs/conclusions felt unfinished. It was an easy read. Generally unsatisfying and directionless. It’s too bad, I really did like the characters- how flawed, multi-faceted, and sympathetic they all managed to be.

This is difficult to rate. I love the setting but it so foreign to me that, at times, I lost track of character names and relationships. I also couldn’t stop wondering how accurate it was. Is this really what gay life in Iran is like? If it’s reasonably accurate then I learned so much! If it’s not reasonably accurate then I wasted my time. I enjoyed the book more for what I learned than for any particular love of the characters.

Definitely a good story, although I probably would have enjoyed it a bit more a few years ago. There was just a bit too much longing and sadness for me. I love a good book on pain and suffering but I just couldn’t connect with the characters that much. There was not much of an explanation on why this forbidden romance was so strong, so worth giving up anything for. Otherwise, it was interesting. I just wish we got some more depth into the characters’ pasts.
